You don't have to transfer at all. Most of the best home brewers have abandoned doing a secondary fermentation. Just let it ferment out, wait a few extra days for it to clear, then bottle or keg. Honestly when I was still bottling I would ferment in the carboy then transfer to a bucket with a valve to bottle.

Transfer beer to second fermenter after two days, when the initial vigorous fermentation has already taken place.

Generally you want to wait 5 to 7 days before transferring the beer from the primary to the secondary carboy. You also want to watch the CO2 output. It should be very little or nonexistent when you transfer to the secondary carboy.
